“I want to start a virtual assistant business, but I don’t know how” or

“Where do I get clients?” or

“Can I start a virtual assistant business part-time?” or

“Can you make a good living as a virtual assistant?”

These are some of the questions that people ask me all the time.

The simple answers that I can share in the limited space and time of a Facebook post are:

1. First, you have to assess your skills.

Are business owners looking for your expertise? The top 7 most sought-after virtual assistant skills are:

  • social media marketing and support skills
  • general admin support skills
  • website creation and maintenance skills
  • customer service skills
  • graphics design skills
  • technical support skills (tech-savviness)
  • blogging

2. Make sure you have the equipment you need to work remotely.

You’ll need a cellphone, computer, and high-speed internet to start.

3. You may start as a freelancer working part-time or full time.

It depends on your other obligations, your financial situation, whether or not you currently have a full-time job or not, etc.).

  • You can find clients in freelance sites like Upwork, Guru.com, Freelancer.com, Fiverr.com. There are more freelance websites online.
  • You can join social media groups where small business owners hang out and start networking. Let them know the services you offer.
  • You can tell your family and friends to recommend your services to potential clients.

There are many other ways to market your services. These are ways that you can start without spending any $ on advertising.

4. And to answer the last question, yes! You can make a good living as a virtual assistant.

I started my virtual assistant business in 2009. It has grown into a team-based business over the years. I am a single mom of two and my family relies 100% on my income. You can make multiple six figures with a team-based virtual assistant business. There’s a high demand for virtual assistants. There are many opportunities to grow, expand, or specialize. How much you make is entirely up to you.

  • You can develop your skills and become an online business manager and offer such services (high on demand)
  • You can expand your business by hiring virtual assistants to work under you. Taking this step will increase your capacity to serve more clients and make more money.
  • You can specialize in a specific skill such as customer service, graphics design, social media marketing, etc. and charge premium prices for your specialized skills.

The sky’s the limit, and you get to determine your income goals.

A word of caution, though, like all other successful businesses, this is not a get-rich-scheme. And this is not an MLM business where you get people to sign up under you.

I hope these answers are helpful.

Of course, I can only say so much in a Facebook post, but my goal is for you to see that it’s NOT AS COMPLICATED as many people make it. I know for a fact that if I started my own business and have never looked back for the last 11 years, you can too!
